PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Alsta Hydrogel is a potassium polyacrylate superabsorbent polymer for agriculture. It absorbs 500 to 600 times its own weight in water, forming gel beads in the soil that act as a reservoir in the root zone: they trap rain and irrigation water that would otherwise run off or evaporate, and release it back to the plant as the soil dries.

A 5 kg pack therefore holds roughly 2,500 to 3,000 litres of water once charged. In practice that shows up as lower drought stress, better seed germination, lower sapling mortality and less water lost to run-off and evaporation - which is why it earns its place in arid and semi-arid areas and in any season where irrigation is uncertain. It also binds loose soil matter and improves soil structure.

It absorbs soil nutrients along with the water and makes them available to the plant, which cuts overall fertiliser and pesticide usage by around 30 to 35%. It does not alter the chemical composition of the soil and does not interfere with the action of applied fertilisers, herbicides, fungicides or insecticides, and it stays effective at high temperature. HOW TO USE

  • Get the rate right for your crop — Application rate depends on crop, soil type and irrigation pattern. Tell us what you are growing and the field conditions, and we will work the rate with you.
  • Place it in the root zone — Mix it into the soil where the roots will be - at sowing, transplanting or in the planting pit. Broadcast on the surface it does nothing.
  • Mix it evenly — Work it through the soil rather than leaving pockets. A concentrated pocket of gel is not a reservoir, it is a waterlogged spot.
  • Charge it with water — Irrigate after application so the polymer takes up water and swells. It only starts working once it is charged.
  • Carry on as normal — Fertilisers, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides all work as before. Irrigation intervals can usually be stretched - watch the crop and adjust.
